From Scarlet Fever to Surgical Loss: Harold’s Decades-Long Journey

Sometimes, the biggest changes in our lives start small. For one of our patients, Harold, it began with a childhood illness that would shape his hearing for the rest of his life.
Harold’s hearing challenges began when he was just seven or eight years old, after a bout of scarlet fever left him with total hearing loss for a month. Though his hearing returned, it was never quite the same. Then, a mastoid surgery in 1964 resulted in a permanent 25% loss.
Over the decades, his hearing gradually declined. “I first realized I had hearing challenges when I was 7 or 8,” Harold shared, “and now I’m almost deaf with 40% hearing.”
Living with progressive hearing challenges can create daily obstacles, from struggling to follow conversations to feeling isolated even in a room full of people. It’s a journey many people in our community experience, but Harold chose to take a proactive step and seek a solution.
His journey is a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to seek help and that the right support can make all the difference.
Approaching Care Without Fear
Despite the severity of his hearing challenges, Harold felt confident reaching out to our hearing clinic in Wiarton. He told us he believed that if anyone could help him, it would be our team. That kind of trust means a great deal to us, and it’s something we work to earn with every patient, every day.
At Great Lakes Hearing, you’re more than an appointment on the schedule. Our patient-first approach means taking the time to listen, understand your unique challenges and work through any concerns along the way.
“My favourite thing about working with the clinic is that they are always willing to help, troubleshoot, make you feel important and always have a smile,” Harold shared.
That’s at the heart of what we do. As an independent, locally owned clinic, our focus is simple: providing care that puts you first.
Maximizing Every Sound: The Daily Impact of Proper Support
For Harold, getting the right support meant reconnecting with the everyday moments that matter. With properly fitted hearing aids, he can more easily take part in conversations and enjoy watching television.
Although Harold still finds it difficult to follow conversations in crowded environments, his custom-fit hearing aids help him hear as well as possible in the situations he encounters every day.
“Hearing aids enable me to hear the best I can,” he explains. “I can have a conversation and watch TV.”
This is where professional fitting and programming can make a meaningful difference. As an independent clinic, we aren’t tied to a single manufacturer. We offer advanced hearing technology from leading brands, including Phonak, Oticon and ReSound, giving us the flexibility to recommend a solution based on your hearing needs, lifestyle and budget.
Breaking Free from Embarrassment: Why Action Beats Hesitation
One of the biggest hurdles for people considering hearing aids is the fear of how they will look or what others will think.
Harold’s advice is simple: “Go for it; don’t hesitate. It’s nothing to be ashamed of.”
He points out that millions of people of all ages wear hearing aids, and today’s devices are incredibly discreet. “No one ever knows you have them on but you,” he says. “It’s more embarrassing to keep asking people to repeat themselves or not hear at all.”
Harold's hearing aids have given him greater confidence in everyday conversations and more freedom to enjoy the activities he loves. His experience is a reminder that getting help with your hearing can open the door to greater connection and confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q: What happens during my first hearing assessment?
A: Your first appointment is a comprehensive evaluation designed to give us a clear picture of your hearing health. We’ll begin with a conversation about your medical history, hearing concerns and the situations where you may be having difficulty hearing.
From there, we’ll perform a series of painless assessments to measure your hearing across different frequencies and determine your hearing thresholds. The process is comfortable, informative and gives us the insight we need to recommend the right care for you.
Q: How will I know if I need hearing aids?
A: After your hearing evaluation, we’ll take the time to review your results with you and explain what they mean for your hearing. If your assessment indicates that amplification could benefit you, we’ll discuss whether hearing aids may be a good option.
Your needs and preferences will guide that conversation, and there’s never any pressure; our goal is to give you clear, helpful information so you can make a confident and informed decision.
Q: What makes an independent hearing clinic different?
A: As an independent clinic, we’re not owned by a hearing aid manufacturer or a large national chain. That gives us the freedom to focus on what works best for you.
We can recommend hearing technology from leading brands and consider your hearing needs, lifestyle, preferences and budget when helping you find the right solution.
